That means you get to the showroom, and say to the salesman: "No, I don't need the blind-spot-rear-entretaining-massaging-adaptive-steering-guided-22-inch-cruise-controled-cupholders. The base car is exactly what I want."
My take is the Volkswagen Golf MK7. Because no other car in its base form and at this price point feels as good as this. It may be on the inside, driving dynamics, sensation of solidity, but I would be perfectly fine with it as a base model.
So tell me, what car would you buy absolutely base?
(Try to avoid a 458 Italia, or an AMG or something saying you wouldn't add a single option to them.)

The Dacia Duster. First off, the base model is very cheap. For instance, you'd have to pay about (the equivalent of) $1000 more for the cheapest (60 hp, 3-door) VW Polo. And the cheapest Duster even looks good - it's a real workhorse, and a lot of car for that kind of money. Too bad it's only 2WD and has no a/c.

I'd feel a little silly buying a Duster with no four-wheel drive, though by that same token, I wouldn't want to get one with any option other than four-wheel drive. It's a great cheap utility vehicle; I'd want it as utilitarian as possible.

I got my 2011 Infiniti M37x without the optional driver add on crap, because I am not a text-messaging-while-driving moron that needs adaptive cruise control or panic braking assist or lane avoidance warnings. And I felt the base 330hp VQ engine was more than sufficient, such that the optional V8 was unnecessary. I normally believe in buying the highest trim line of a car, but this car surprised me, in that the base 3.7 VQ engine is just that good.

As long as it has A/C and a Telescoping Steering wheel(this is a must for me as I have long legs and somewhat short arms, sort of like a T-Rex). I would buy any base model because that's where the real value is. all the options are ridiculously overpriced.
a base model fiesta is $12000(A/C is $1000 more) and loaded is over $22000. you're telling me all the options are worth 10K? I could almost buy 2 base fiesta's for that.

I tried to purchase my Mustang GT as close to stock as possible. The most stock example readily available still had reversing sensors, which was a minor cost increase so it was fine. My thought was that over the course of the car's life I would be replacing most of it aftermarket anyway.

I bought one of these in 1979 with "0" options for a little over4 grand out the door. 2.3 4 cylinder/4 speed manual.
I drove it for 9 years (close to 100k) and only changed oil, filters, tires and wiper blades. It was the best/worst car ever.
By the time I traded it in on a 88 Tempo.....it was pretty used up.

VW made sure nobody would buy the base (Trendline in EU, not sure about the trim names in US) model of mk7 anymore with one simple trick - the front seats. The base trim level with some small options had about 60% of the volume sold in EU, which was too much for VAG. So what they did, at least for EU models - again, not sure about US - they will put very cheap, uncomfortable seats in the Trendline model which costs about 15k EUR with the basic 1.2tsi engine. The Comfortline model, which has cruise control, color touch screen, armrest and some other minor luxuries has the proper, good seats that in mk6 were standard. The highline trim has something they call super-comfort seats, but I was not able to tell the difference. The difference between the basic and mid-level trim is HUGE. And I asked the sales person if someone is actually buying Trendline trims. He said he sold about 50 MK7 this year and and less than 10 were base trim - and all of them were fleet cars. The seats are worse than...anything in current VW lineup, even worse than VW Up seats. And that is basically a piece of wireframe and a 1inch of marshmallows covered with cheap fabric.

I hate pre-defined trim levels. In US it is not at all that utterly stupid as in EU, where french and german automakers are basically saying FUCK OFF, POOR SCUM, either buy it loaded or ride the bus. Toyota and Mazda and most of the other Japanese brands are usually sticking to 4-5 trims but little to no options. If trim level 2 does not have heated seats you usually can't opt in just for those and rather have to jump to level 3. This at least removes a bit of a headache. Hyundai/Kia are slowly aligning their pricing models with VW - 5 years ago Hyundai had NO options except sunroof. No. For any car sold in EU, you had to pick one of the trims. Now the list has 30+ items on it, for all trims.
I would give credit to premium brands, although they started to diversify to 2 or 3 "lines" - Merc started with Avantgarde, AMG line and Elegance, Audi followed with S line and such and BMW has the Modern, Sport and such... that usually just differs in interior leather, rims and some chrome jewelry - but you can select the options to your liking - not sure if I like to pay for freakin automatic AC in a 40k car, but why not, some even prefer the "stove" controlled manual AC (old people and fat people - manual AC is usually more powerful when it comes to burst-cooling as it always runs on full power).
But the king, the king of many many years is Skoda. And with every model it is getting worse. These days Skoda Octavia Combi is not even more expensive than Golf Variant, by some 300 euros in comparable trim and engine levels, it is also deliberately smaller, because VAG really does not like Skoda is not the "entry" brand anymore and people see it is a 1:1 brand with VW. The list of options for base Skoda Fabia is as long as the options list for 911. Some say the prices are also similar...
Vicente Esteve
> mumblese
05/10/2014 at 10:58 | 0 |
Wow! I also have seen the turn of Skoda as a direct competitor of VW. Its own success has now troubled its own father. I have to say I like the 30+ A la carte options more than the trim levels. But thats just me liking complexity.
